One of the great things about standard 55-gallon steel drums is that they are made of one of the most recycled materials in the world. For this reason, there are many places that would be glad to take them off your hands since they can be repurposed and used again as if they were brand new. Orlando Drum Industrial Packaging can help you dispose of unwanted steel drums. We specialize in cleaning and recycling drums that can be reused or disposing of drums that cannot be recycled. Orlando Drum also provides pickup of used drums and delivery service for clean drums. Many industrial facilities utilize services similar to Orlando Drum to easily get rid of unwanted drums that take up lots of space and to have new drums dropped off at the facility with no hassle.
Cleaning Process For Recycled Drums
At Orlando Drum, we utilize a careful and thorough cleaning process to make sure all of our recycled drums meet UN safety standards as regulated by the United States Department of Transportation.
First, the drums are unloaded, opened, and inspected. Next, the drums are then loaded on a progressive washer that takes them through several stages of washing, rinsing, and drying. The drums are then inspected. If the drums pass the inspection they are capped and any labels are removed. Drums are then blasted in order to get rid of all exterior coatings and identifying marks. Following that drums are then inspected for any exterior imperfections (holes, dents). After drums pass this inspection the chimes are re-rounded which means the drums are able to be leak tested. The drums are leak tested with our state-of-the-art ultrasonic leak tester which will detect holes as small as 10,000 of an inch. After that, the drums enter our automated paint booth allowing a particular amount of paint to be applied to offer the coatings maximum performance and appearance each time. Upon drying the drums are loaded into trucks and prepared for delivery.
If any of the drums don’t pass any of our three inspections or are unable to satisfy the present UN safety regulations they’re washed, crushed, and recycled into a raw steel resource.
Disposal Service For Unsalvageable Drums
Not all of the used drums that Orlando Drums picks up are going to be ready to be recycled and sent out for reuse. Depending on the condition, drums will fall under one of the following three categories:
- Reusable: Drums that are intact with no holes or severe dents are rust-free and the contents can be rinsed out. Drums that have contained oils, light solvents, food products, and soaps are examples of such products.
- Non-reusable: Drums that have contained paints, resigns, glues, surfactants, or other hard-to-clean materials.
- Crushers: Drums that have holes and are badly dented or top or bottom chime has been compromised.
For any drums and containers that need to be picked up, washed, de-identified, or scrapped there is an $8.00 charge. There is a $5.00 charge for drums and containers that are dropped off at our location that need to be scrapped or those that are deemed non reusable and/or non-reconditionable. There is no fee if drums are dropped off at our location and are found to be reusable. Caution: All drums and containers will be refused if they do not have closures in place and aren’t empty adhering to CFR 49 (see DOT UN requirements page for definition).
Steel Drum Pickup and Delivery Services
For pick up of 50 or more reusable 55-gallon steel drums, there is no fee. For pick up of less than 50 drums, there is a $60.00 pick upcharge. If the drums are deemed unusable and impossible to recondition and need to be washed, de-identified, and scrapped there is an $8.00 fee per container.
For customers that buy at least one trailer load of drums per month, we will leave a trailer at your property for your convenience. If more than one trailer is needed or you buy less than a load, trailers are available for storage for a small fee of $250 per month. Deliveries in the Orlando area are $60.00 for each delivery. Call for a quote if you need a delivery outside the Orlando area. Orlando Drum and Container own a fleet of tractor-trailers to ensure you get your containers when you need them and when they are promised.
Why Steel Drums are the Most Environmentally Friendly Drum Option
When it comes to determining how eco-friendly a certain material is, one of the biggest considerations is whether the material is sustainable. Steel is the world’s most recycled product, with more steel recycled in any given year than all the other materials combined. This is why steel drums are the most environmentally friendly drum option for companies that need to use and discard a high quantity of drums every year. Recycled steel is just as durable as originally-sourced steel, so by using recycled steel drums from Orlando Drums you are saving money and getting a product just as good as a brand-new drum.
